New version for firmware 1.1.4

This is for all users of firmware 1.1.4 and below:

I’ve just compile and uploaded the latest and last version of Wiki2Touch. I created a new installer source because I don’t know in which package Wiki2Touch is currently listed.

In order to install this version it’s a good idea to first remove the old one. But keep your data files. You will be asked this during uninstall.

Then add source url “i.wiki2touch.com” to your installer as shown here:

New installer source

After the source was added you have a new category called “Wiki” and inside you will find Wiki2Touch 0.71.

This version, the number is 0.71, includes

  • Support for “math”
  • The last search phrase is save
  • Some minor bug fixes

As I’ve already said, this will be the last version for 1.1.4. I will add a short description how math is working. But don’t expect getting it out-of-the-box. You need the data like you need it for images. Basically an MD5 checksum is calculated form the contents of the math-tags and that is the filename for an image. Norbert has helped a lot here and maybe he provides some “math”-packages.

Right now I’m going to fixi and prepare the version for jailbroken 2.0.x devices.

    thanks alot Tom!
I’ll try it now, thank you

You find math images for DE and EN at address:

    http://www.infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/Wiki2Touch/Math/
    (Thanks to Erik !)

Just download from your computer to the iPod/iPhone as e.g. math_de.bin
    with the tranfertool from Tom.

Math-image packages for other languages may follow.

Most (>99.8%) but not all mathStmts are converted to images.

    Norbert.

Could you list those ‘minor bug fixes’?

I am particularly interested in case-insensitive indexing/linking for Cyrillic databases. Right now due a lot of links in the Russian Wiki end up with ‘article not found’ due to mixed up cases of a link and article name itself.

…. still on 1.1.3 and waiting to have wiki on firmware 2 :D

    Hi,
thanks Tom for this terrific update!

I updated the TransferTool to handle the math*.bin packages correctly. Download it here: http://shup.com/Shup/57269/TransferTool_0.19.zip

I’m sorry, I can’t update the source in the CVS repository because Tom removed me from the dev list, so you have to live with the binary :-(

Norbert, I don’t think that it just worked with the old TransferTool version.

BTW: This is just GREAT. All he math is showing up fine, I’m so happy about that. I really missed all the math equations. Thanks a lot for this!

  6. Norbert Says:

    Hi,
nice to hear you could use the math packages.

One comment: If no image with math-symbols can be generated (

  7. Norbert Says:

    … continue …

an image with the original “tex”-text will be generated. (

  8. Thomas Says:

    Hi,
also love the new update, but I’m missing one feature that was announced in April: The on screen menu to jump to the top of the page.
Am I just too stupid to find it or was this removed for some reason?

  9. Tom Says:

    Thomas-

you’re not stupid, I’ve disabled the feature. It’s annoying. If you not directly hit a link you get the OSD and it’s need a second click to get it away again.

But the codes is still in and if you like you can enable it. You have to edit the two .html files PreArticle.html and PostArticle.html. Both are located inside the folder /Applications/Wiki2Touch/daemon/webcontent.

On the end of the first file you must remove the comments around the form-tag, at the start of the second the once for the closing end-form-tag.

  10. Thomas Says:

    Tom,
    thanks for the quick reaction.
It works great now and I’ll see how often I miss the links and get the menu instead :-)
My guess is that it will be less annoying than having to scroll up through long articles to the top of the page…
But it’s always great to have a choice.

  11. Achim (abu) Says:

    Thomas,
    just a minor hint:
Scrolling to the TOP of the page does not need that OSD menu, it is supported directly by MobileSafari: Simply tap on the top border of the screen. That works on every displayed page, not only in Wiki2Touch.
Scrolling to the bottom, or to the TOC, is a different issue, that needs some special handling like the OSD.

  12. Cui Says:

Very looking forward to your next 2.x release. Keep going the good work, please.

Wiki2Touch is absolutely useful to people like me in China where Wikipedia is normally blocked by GFW, even if it’s available now due to the ongoing Olympic Games.

btw, your way of blocking junk comment almost killed me :-( .. Fortunately Google Translate is there.

  13. Thomas Says:

    abu,

thanks for this tip. Was that in the manual that I never read?

  14. Achim (abu) Says:

    Thomas, I haven’t read it myself :-)
I found it on Jim’s page:

  15. Renato Says:

    Hi Tom!
Your app is great and the last version is awesome.

I think the black onscreen menu option (OSD) is a great option. It’s true that sometimes it show itself when I’m trying to click some link but the possibility to have quikly some links is great.
I think a solution can be to use touch features of iPhone.

Is it possible for example to activate the OSD when you tap everywhere in the page with TWO finger and not one? In that way there’s no problem for the iphone to understand when I’m trying to tap some links or when I’m trying to activate the OSD?
That’s just a idea I had when I read this:

    http://www.sitepen.com/blog/2008/07/10/touching-and-gesturing-on-the-iphone/

  16. Renato Says:

Hi to everyone. I found the code and the solutions.

Here you can download the file PreArticle and PostArticle. Just replace them in the webcontent folder.

    http://www.flyupload.com/?fid=517587477

After that if you tap with one finger nothing new happen. If you tap with two finger the OSD appear. If you want to exit from the OSD just tap again with one finger everywhere outside the black OSD.
    I think it’s a good solutions isn’t it?

  17. emacs Says:

Can you give an update? I still haven’t switched to 2.0 firmware because I love this app and it only works on 1.x. If you’re not still developing, could you at least say so and I’ll move on

  18. Thomas Says:

It works just fine on 2.1, only math support is missing.
    Here’s how (in german):

  19. Oliver Says:

Whenn are you available in apps store

  20. Thomas Says:

Does anybody know where the forum has gone?
I’m only getting ifun’s homepage since a few days.
