Another Wikipedia Application
You might want to know that there is another Offline Wikipedia solution. Have a look and Patrick’s site. Thanks Rizqi for the hint!
What I like about his application:
- The stripped down “database” files. Saves a lot of memory.
- Simple installation because of prepared indexes and modified download able data file (not sure if the later is allowed by Wikipedia).
- The way he’s doing searching. I really should add some AJAX stuff.
What I don’t like:
- How the articles are displayed. A lot of informations are simply not there because they are hidden by templates or tables.
No language independence. You get English and that’s it.
Patrick just dropped a note that you can use his software with other languages. More in the comments…- To much bound to the OS/UI. I use my Mac to check new features and then I simply recompile it for the iPod Touch.
Joining both projects and then creating an easy to use indexer/data file creator for multiple platforms would be great.

Hi, im very excited to se wikipedia ports on the iphone. Keep up the good work, im very thankful. Perhaps you should go together (one working on fronted, while the other on backend). Or opensource like Patrick, for mutual benefits.
I must say that for now the 2GB size of Patricks database is the killer feature for now.

There also is this Wiki app– http://trac2.assembla.com/iPhonePedia/wiki
Have not tried it yet but will.
I tried Patrick’s app and
a) it shows a lot of promise (smaller size, improved searched) but
b) is a little too buggy
b) I have yet to find a redirect that works
So I removed Patrick’s app — staying with Tom’s and will know try the app in the above link.

Hey — I’m the author of the app, and just a heads up to note that it is completely language independent. Just download the source, and run sh/process on any dump of your choice. During development, I tested it with German and Irish versions in addition to English.

Patrick-
thanks for the clarification. Now you’re running into the same problem as I. The Wiki-Server comes with the indexer as source code, but as you can see in this blog, a lot of people are having problems running the indexer and creating the index.
What I really like is to have one package containing everything. The problem is to find a website which hosts such a large files.
