DUAL HDD NAS: Some more resources

I will soon post a complete and detailed description on how to get the box working again after a unsuccessfull firmware flash burned the box. To be able to do that I used resources from Flipstars FAQ and his Wiki. You can reach it here:

http://flipstar.net/myfaq/

http://nas-2000.org/

While the NAS 2000 (Icy Box IB-NAS2000, build by raidsonic: http://www.raidsonic.de/) is not the same as the HDD DUAL NAS they do share the same chipset and a lot of the same features. The firmware is also *not the same* but you can easily see that the firmware comes from the same source.

So having a look at the NAS 2000 device is very usefull. For instance, Flip’s ssh integration works also on the DUAL HHD NAS.

    Hi

    Great article…,

Do you know if you can flash with the NAS2000 without problem?..

This machine even with the latest firmware is full of bugs, no anonymous access accounts work to the given assigned shared folder, therefore some programs fail to connect to the share as don’t inpersonate and try to access as anonymous to the shares.

Also the itunes server don’t work, if you try to access the songs just drops in the middle of playing.

Looking forward to read what firmware and how you install it and what funtions it has.

    :o)

    Regards

    Marcos

  2. Faye Says:

I just got one of these myself… Also having a Mac, I’m interested in afp, and dpap as well as daap.

I’m looking at the sites you’ve referenced, interested in making a 2.3.3a + afp + dropbear.. not sure how easy it is. We’ll soon see, I guess.

    Faye

  3. Faye Says:

OK, If you have daapd working, don’t install iTunes 7.2 - it will break it horrendously. You’ll no longer be able to access your tunes share.

How hard is it to downgrade again? I don’t have an ApfelTV. Or.. has this already been addressed by mt-daapd/Firefly?

great, i have this piece of hardware now since some weeks but didn’t use it as i wanted first to access it somehow via a command line.

    thx a lot -bdhome

  5. Darrin Says:

Great info. Have you considered starting a web site/forum for this box? There are a few of them around now and I think a good collection of tips would be useful.

I have one - I’ve spent a fair bit of time trying to get NFS working with my mac. I’d set up the share and use the Finder’s “Connect to Server” option to connect. Every time resulted in an username/password error (a bit strange as NFS doesn’t use names and passwords).

Anyway it can be fixed as follows:
    1. Enable telnet access as descibed in this blog.
    2. Log in as root.
    3. Edit the file /etc/exports using vi.
    4. For each of the shares, add the option “insecure”. I also add “async” which speeds up NFS a bit at the risk of data loss during a crash. So the lines look like:

    /mnt/ide3/public *(rw,root_squash,insecure,async)

    5. Reboot the box

Now you can use “Connect to server” to access the NAS from OSX.

    Hi,

i have the same box. Found a website which should have support but nocthing found there.

    http://www.sednacomputer.com/

I’m interested in to add powermanagement that the drive is not running continously.

  7. Stefan Says:

    Hello martin,
you can configure a time period after that the disks are powered down.
Actually I am not at home so I can not have a look where it is exactly configured, but you can adjust a value in minutes after that the HDDs will
be powered down to minimize the power consumption. anyway, this is just
a rudimentary mechanism but it works. keep in mind that the nas box needs
a longer time to react after the disks are powered down, when you want to
access it again. regardless if you use ftp, smb or nfs.
    hope this helps

  9. steve Says:

What’s teh laregest drives anybody has had working with this?
Specs say 2×500GB, I;ve tried a pair of 1TB but it dies with out of memory (or rather moans about a kernel paging request which I figure is probably the same thing!

I was wondering whether to format them outside of the box and then re-introduce them, or partition as 2×500GB partitions and then try and do somethign.

Unless somebody can think of a cleaner way?

  10. Faraday Says:

    Hi World!

I just managed to inatall the latest raidsonic firmware for Nas-2000 on my “Dual HDD NAS” it´s almost the same hardware that is why is works.
It´s great because the latest radsonic firmware have the feature to install plugins, like ssh, twonky etc.

I´m working on installing debian etch on my “Dual HDD NAS” because i want to have more flexibility and more packets to install.
I guess I could need some support by this plan.
If you are intrested mail me.

    have fun with your box!

  11. Fabio Says:

Hello everybody and thanks for the info.
I cannot succeed in using two 250 GB disks, the web interface simply does not show up (it worked perfectly well with two 80 GB disks).

If I unplug the upper disk everything is fine (except for the fact that I’d not need a DUAL hdd nas if I had a SINGLE hdd), if I unplug the lower disk I’m stuck.

Is this a known bug? Has anybody experienced such an issue?

    Thanks in advance!

    Fabio

  12. Piermattia Says:

Hi Fabio, Have you tried with different combination? like the 250 in the lower sledge and the 80 in the upper? Maybe it’s an incompatibility issue, what’s the brand and the model of the 2 250gigs?

  13. Piermattia Says:

    For Faraday,
How did you manage to install the nas2000 firmware? Did you use the webgui page utils or the telnet? And what version did you use, the original one or the twinky? Did you notice some improvements in speed or something else?

  14. Fabio Says:

    Ciao Piermattia,
the system is working now with the 80 GB Maxtor disk in the upper sledge (I reckon it’s IDE channel 1) and the 250 GB Seagate in the lower. I was thinking of restoring the RAID 1 system between the 80 and the 250 disks, take out the 80 and mount the other 250 Seagate, do you reckon this can work?
    Many thanks in advance…

    Fabio

  15. Fabio Says:

I forgot make and model of the disks:
80 GB: Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9
250 GB (both): Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

New test: I rebuilt the RAID 1 array from scratch with this config:
    Pri IDE: 80 GB
    Sec IDE: 250 GB

Turned off, took out 80 GB, moved 250 GB from RAID array to Pri IDE, inserted other 250 GB, turned on again… No change!

It seems like Pri IDE has a capacity handling issue. Maybe the a particular version of the NAS2000 firmware would help?

  16. Fabio Says:

I succedeed in installing NAS2000 firmware (at least part of it, ramdisk and apps) via telnet. Everything fine.
    I’ll try a full twinky install later…

  17. Fabio Says:

Twinky firmware is ok. It works flawlessly (upgrade as described in README).
I’m reverting back to original, though; my issue is having a pair of working disks…
Anyone knows how to poke original MAC address back into the flash?
    Thanks!

  18. Faraday Says:

    For Piermattia,

I installed the latest NAS-2000 firmware from webgui. It´s pretty easay.
Just before I had CentriNAS_v2_3_3a installed.

    bye

  19. Fabio Says:

Hello everyone; I was wondering what type of disks you’re using with the nas (make, model, capacity…) and if somebody can explain how to restore RAID 1 array in case a disk has to be changed.
    Thanks in advance!

  20. Piermattia Says:

Back to work after a short holiday…
    For Fabio,
Have you tried with the latest firmware: http://www.mrt-communication.com/drivers/Dual%20NAS%20firmware%202.3.3.rar
It might be the v2_3_3b, and i want to kow why you revert to the original firmware after twinky update? It can’t manage two disks?

    For everyone…
I got the sata model, do you think it can work with nas2000 or twinky firmware or i will make a disaster?

  21. Piermattia Says:

    For Fabio
How do you revert back to original after upgrade to Twinky?

  22. Tobi Says:

    Hello everybody,

has anybody set up a JBOD with 2 different harddisks?
I don’t want to set up a RAID 0 or 1. But in the webinterface i did not find a
JBOD entry. The firware installed is v2_3_3a.

    Thanks in advance!

  23. Fabio Says:

    Piermattia,
I flashed the firmware via red boot as described here:

    http://haukap.net/2007/05/13/enabling-telnet-the-other-way/#comment-33

To “reach” red boot, read here:

    http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/TelnetIntoRedBoot

I used a cross over ethernet cable, the vbs script to enter red boot and this firmware:

    http://svp.co.uk/helpdeskbigfiles/CentriNAS_v2_3_3a.tar.gz

Unfortunately, at the moment my NAS is dead. I’ll let you know if I manage to make it work again.

  24. Fabio Says:

The NAS is back to life, I think I flashed it badly last time…
Now it’s working again and with the new firmware from MRT Communications:

    http://www.mrt-communication.com/drivers/DUAL-NAS_Firmware-961106.rar

The new webgui is terrible, half way between old NAS gui and NAS-2000.

At the moment I don’t have any spare hdd, I’ll let you know as soon as I load a pair of disks.

  25. Piermattia Says:

    Fabio,
thank you thery much for the informations,
I want let you kno that I’ve opened a blog about this little devil: http://dualnas.blogspot.com/
If you want to help me in the contents I will be very pleased.

I was convinced that the latest firmware was this:
    http://www.multicase.de/en/download/CentriNAS_v2_3_3b.tar.gz
Maybe they are the same, and i don’t know how it’s before because It arrive to me with this version.

The good news for everyone is that with the latest firmware the telnet is enabled by default…let’s start game

  26. Piermattia Says:

    Fabio,
Thank you for all the informations..
I had opened a blog on this nas in italian and i want to know if you want to cooperate with me, this is my mail: afioravanti@tiscalinet.it

    For Haukap..
What did you think about a WiKi with all the stuff, information and guides about this NAS,I think that everybody will be very happy and desire to contribute!

  27. Pelle Says:

    Hello,

I have a quation about the DUAL NAS, because I have s problen when the NAS ist connected to a network- port with auto- negotiation.

When I start the NAS connected this way, the TCP/IP transport is not started.

I don’t know the reason but I think there are problems with the NAS port and auto- negotiation.

To solve the problem I connect the NAS with crossover to my laptop and configure the port on my laptop to a fixed speed (100 Full- Duplex).

I want to know if you have the same problem, or if my NAS- port is damaged.

What do you think, could this be a problem of the driver or hardware?

I really would like to test the nas2000 software on my nas, but I have to many data on it and no other backup device having so much space.
Thats why I need to know if the data will be keept when the firmware is flashed.

    @Fabio
Did you already see that the telnet- page is removed in the new NAS- firmware? I was really suprised!

  28. Piermattia Says:

    Hi Pelle,
I’ve tried to use the nas2000 firmware but i lost the use of one of two hd, and for the other the firmware ask to me to format it, so i returned to the original firmware and all it’s back to work (no data loss)

For your problem with network port, i have the nas connected to the router and i can accesss it from all the pc without problem, so i can’t help you.

For the telnet page i see that ther is no telnet access in the latest firmware G5S52233211 and the page was removed, the trick of ping -o ipadddress; telnet ipaddress at the reboot doesn’t work, so without a new solution i’ll return to the G5S52233205 version (v233b).

  29. Piermattia Says:

    Faraday,
I’ve istalled tinky on the nas and now i’ready for debian, did you manage on installing it on dual nas? How it’s work? And apt-get work on it?

  30. Martin Says:

    HI Stefan,

i tried the power management function, rebootet ths NAS but it seems that the drives are still working after the time is over. So this doesn’t work correctly.

  31. Jeremy Says:

    Hi

Any idea if the owner of www.nas2000.org would mind if we added the differences between the nas2000 and the dual nas on the wiki?

A firmware for all sounds a good idea to me?

If the dual nas’s firmware is loaded on a nas2000 any idea if the usb ports that have to be soldered on the nas2000 will work?

    Jeremy

  32. Jeremy Says:

    that should have been www.nas-2000.org

  33. Tom Says:

Having one firmware for both devices would be great, yes. In fact, Flips once used the kernel of my dual hd nas for his nas2000 to enable the on boards usb port. So that is working.

Anyone know where I can download v2.3.3b from - G5S52233205?

  35. Pelle Says:

Has anyone an idear if and how it would be possible to set the network port on the dual nas to a fixed speed and duplex value?

I asked the support on mrt-communication, but they answered the the installed driver (rt2561ap) only supports auto- negotiation.

Normally in linux there should be an option for the driver could be set in /etc/modprobe.d rt2561ap.conf file.

May be there is an external tool.

If I google for the driver- module I only can find wireless devices supported by that driver ???

I would like to know too, if it is possible (a command) to save modifcations done in the the flash partitions, to make them permanent.

  37. gtxinfo Says:

    Hello,

I have been reading these threads with interest, as I have a Dual NAS with one 500GB HDD fitted; I use the Dual NAS for File Transfer within my home network but would ideally like to stream audio & video files, to locations both inside and outside my home network.

The Dual NAS is running the latest firmware number G5S52233211, which does not seem to allow telnet access; so far I have not been able to locate the previous firmware number G5S52233205, although I have found but have not installed CentriNAS v233a.

Should I be attempting to (a) locate and install the previous firmware number G5S52233205, (b) install CentriNAS v233a and/or (c) install some other firmware, eg NAS2000; in order to archive multimedia streaming using something like Twonky?

I would be grateful for any advice you may have; please assume I am an absolute beginner, so any basic instructions would also be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Guys, does anyone know where I can download the G5S52233205 firmware? Upgrading to G5S52233211 has broken my NAS. I can get into the bootloader so I guess I can recover if I can find the old firmware!

  40. Paul Says:

    Hi.

I just got my new Dual HDD NAS (not the Giga one).
The new SATA HDDs have not yet arrived and i wondered if this NAS is working.
After switching the IP of my laptop to 192.168.1.10 i connected it to the NAS and powerd it on. Even after 5 minutes of waiting it was not possible to connect to 192,168.1.1. The blue power-led was on, but the link-led on the ethernet-port of the laptop did not light (and so did the link led on the NAS). I tried several patch wires but it did not work. So i connected the NAS to my network switch (because i thought i might need a crossover wire) the result was the same. No ping was possible and the encluded software did not find the NAS.

Now i wonder if the NAS needs a HDD connected to boot and get the network working?

Has anybody experienced something like this and can confirm?

  41. Volker Says:

(for Paul): look in Your Router for DHCP addresses used. The box may be on an address Youre not aware of. . . Mine was by default in the 192.168.2.x network . .

    Hello !
Just wanted to tell You that I bricked my Dual HDD IDE NAS with RAID1. Felt a bit lost. By simply putting it to an external USB-IDE I was able to mount the drive and fully recover the data (to an other disk).
Now one thing: can I recover the old config and just put in the disks ? the are fine, just wiped out everything in the firmware &ramdisk. Running the latest tinky now . . Greetings and have fun !
    Volk

  42. Paul Says:

@volker: tnx for your idea. But there is no physical connection (status-indicator on switch lights on every IP-adress… but it doesn’t when the NAS is connected). I returned the NAS to my dealer for warranty exchange. :-(

  43. Mac Says:

@Fabio & Samuel: Great Post! My NAS is now back to life after a bad flash. I now use the latest version from mrt-communication.

I am still facing a “serious” problem though. After a couple of hours of activity my NAS stopps responding to pings and I am not able to access the Webinterface anymore. Sometimes even the router to which the NAS is connected crashes. When I unplug the NAS is comes back imediately but the NAS need to be rebooted. Does Anyone have seen this strange “behaviour”?

    Cheers
    Mac

  44. Paul Says:

Well, after i got a warranty exchange NAS (in fact it was an repaired one!), i was happy to see the LINK and ACT LED blinking after switching it on.
But soon i was dissappointed again. After installing and formatting the HDD, the NAS did not reboot automatically. Even after 30 minutes after it showed “Reboot may take several minutes” the system did no boot. I powered it off and on again and it worked. But again after some time the system did not respond. It seemed to be an temperature problem. Leaving the system off for a while makes it work, but after 5-10 minutes it locks up. So i directly connected the Fan to the onboard 12V-plug for permanent cooling… still the same.

Spending 2 long evenings with it, i decided to send the NAS to my dealer and get my cash back.

I got myself a Intel D201GLY2 mainboard, 512MB DDR RAM (for the cash i got back) and installed SME Linux on it. It works fine, put the 2 HDD into a RAID1-array (Software) and also has some nice features like an email-, dhcp-, apache-, dns-, proxy- and fax-server and it needs just 60W of power due to the low power cpu (Celeron 220@1,2GHz). Now i can switch of my old Server that fullfilled these tasks and took a lot more power!

@Mac: maybe this is a solution for your problem too?! :-)
